줄거리
단테의 신곡과 쵸서의 캔터베리 서사시를 근거로 한 연쇄 살인 사건이 발생한다. 비만증인 남자는 강압에 의해 위가 찢어질 때까지 먹다가 죽었고, 악덕 변호사 역시 강압에 의해 식칼로 자기 살을 한 파운드나 베어내서 죽는다. 첫 범행이 벌어지자마자, 은퇴를 일주일 앞둔 흑인 노형사 윌리엄 소머셋(모건 프리먼)은, 조직적이며 지적인 사고능력으로 그것이 기나긴 연쇄 살인의 시작에 불과함을 직감하는데...
성서에 나오는 '7가지 죄악'을 근거로 마치 천지창조의 스케줄을 모방하듯, 일주일 동안 하루에 한 명씩 잔인하게 살인 행각을 벌이는 희대의 연쇄 살인범과, 그 죽음의 심판을 필사적으로 막으려는 두 형사의 이야기를 그린 액션 스릴러. 이들의 치열한 접전이 금방이라도 스크린을 찢고 밖으로 튀어나올 것 같다는 평을 받은 긴장감 넘치는 스릴러물로서, 소재와 분위기 면에서 <양들의 침묵>과 흡사하다. 90년대 초 온 미국을 경악하게 했던 미완 사건 '별자리 살인(Zodiac Killer)'이라는 실제의 사건을 토대로 한 탄탄한 시나리오와 음악의 하워드 쇼어, 촬영에 다리우스 콘쥐 등 쟁쟁한 스탭진이 가세해 완성도면에서도 주목을 받았다.
